Mike Marsteller is a fellow ENMU Club member…please support this locally-based, non-profit charity and help spread the word about HCM Foundation’s program and goals!

HCM Foundation Races to Help Cancer Victims Endure the Fight

A new hope is on the horizon for families afflicted by cancer and for those whose hearts go out to them but feel helpless in such a somber circumstance. Just starting up in October of last year, HCM Foundation is actively connecting cancer patients, survivors, and their families with companies, endurance athletes, and individuals willing to offer their support.

The idea for the HCM Foundation was inspired in Mike Marsteller, a 27 year old whose family still endures the lasting impact of cancer. Marsteller was just a baby when his father lost his battle with colon cancer at the young age of 30. Marsteller’s mother, despite being a young mother of two and having just lost her life partner, had to forge ahead working and handling daily life as a grieving single parent. Growing up in the Lehigh Valley region, Marsteller witnessed similar scenes among other cancer-stricken families and 26 years after his dad’s passing made a decision.

“It was finally time to do more than just say, ‘I understand and I wish there was something I could do to help,’” Marsteller, president and founder of HCM Foundation, said. “Through the foundation I am able to put my learning experiences to good use and help others.”

The foundation, including acting board members Paul Aemisegeo, Mike Carriglitto, Christopher Garges, and Alex Barth, directs and co-directs with local companies and universities running and walking events throughout the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas. These events bring the community together to celebrate life and raise funds to support families battling cancer. For regular endurance runners and triathletes, HCM began its Fund Racing program in which Fund Racers receive personalized coaching and nutritional guidance and their own fundraising webpage as they train for the CGI UNITE half marathon or any races of their choice. HCM has also registered with iGive.com, an online shopping mall where a portion of each purchase can go toward HCM at no cost to the shopper.

All funds raised go directly into the hands of those who are suffering to assist with groceries, medical bills, travel expenses, and other needs. HCM works closely with the social work department at the Fox Chase Cancer Center – a nonprofit institution formed in 1974 by the union of the Institute for Cancer Research and the American Oncologic Hospital, one of the nation’s first cancer hospitals – to locate appropriate recipients for the funds. HCM’s proceeds also fund the HCM Foundation College Scholarship Program to assist high school and college students who have been significantly impacted by cancer or wish to pursue a career in a cancer-related field.

“My motivation and that of HCM is driven by the strength we find within families we help every day,” Marsteller said. “As HCM Foundation unfolds, it will be a great thing for everyone involved including those who receive help and those who donate help.”

HCM’s next event is the Run Daddy Run 5K at 8:30 a.m. on Father’s Day weekend, Saturday, June 19, 2010, in Kingwood Park, NJ. The event also includes a Two-Mile Support Walk and .5-Mile Kids Fun Run.

We will be having a tent at the Black Bear Triathlon’s Club Corner for everyone to get together after the race. Make sure to stop on by and share your race experience with everyone, cheer on other members, have a drink, and possibly grab a bite to eat. We may need a volunteer or two should the turnout warrant food and drink. We need a heads up how many people are coming to the race and some other information to pull this off successfully, so please take the time to answer the questions in the Evite. Good luck to all those racing and good weather for all those watching and cheering!

We're organizing a spur-of-the-moment, informal training camp to be held this upcoming weekend, Sat May 15 and Sun May 16, open to all current ENMU Club members and coached athletes.

Hi everyone,

Hope all is well and your seasons are starting to swing. No time for an eye-catching, full-color email with cool graphics for this announcement! We’re organizing a spur-of-the-moment, informal training camp to be held this upcoming weekend, Sat May 15 and Sun May 16, open to all current ENMU Club members and coached athletes. You can participate in any or all of the group training sessions, social activities, and/or race listed below as fits your own personal schedule. Here’s the plan:

SATURDAY, MAY 15

8AM Group community trail run led by Budd Coates, departing from the Finish Line Running Store in Emmaus, PA, the official run shop sponsor of ENMU. Runners will access a brand new trailhead within 0.5 miles of the store and continue up the beautiful trails on South Mountain. Distance will be ~5 miles with a shorter option possible.

9:30AM Grab some coffee and more at Perk in Emmaus, PA. *Note: everyone is responsible for their own purchases.

12PM Meet in parking lot of 24-7 Fitness Westend to travel to Beltzville State Park in Lehighton, PA, where we will ride the Black Bear Triathlon bike courses. If you’re racing either the sprint on Sat May 22 or the Olympic on Sun May 23, this coming weekend may be your last chance to preview the tough, hilly course prior to race day. It may be wise to scout out any potholes from this past rough winter in advance of the race, especially on any descents! Even if you’re NOT racing this year, this would definitely give you a good cycling workout. Cue sheets will be provided, which will allow everyone to ride at their own comfort / ability level and extend the ride duration as they wish.

6-8PM Exclusive use of the 24-7 Fitness Westend pool for open water swim training. Yes, open water in a pool. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, read THIS about what we’ve been doing the past few Wednesday evenings. Great way to test out a new wetsuit before your first spring tri, or an old wetsuit to make sure it still fits after that afore-mentioned rough winter : ) *Note: if you’re not a member of 24-7, there will be a $15 guest fee.

8:30PM Dinner at a nearby restaurant, yet TBD, based on how many people can go and whether we’ll need a reservation. *Note: everyone is responsible for their own purchases.

SUNDAY, MAY 16

9AM Join the Finish Line gang at their 8th Annual Ironton Rail to Trail (IRT) 10K race. 10K’s have become harder and harder to find, and this is a good one! Proceeds go directly to maintenance of the trail, which is used by so many of us throughout the year. SO WHAT if you’re afraid your finish time will be slow because your quads are blasted from Saturday’s training…how do you think you’re going to feel on the run leg of that Olympic race you have on your schedule?! Online registration is open till Friday at noon and there will also be day-of registration available.

11AM Picnic at the race site, Saylor Park. Bring some snacks or drinks to share!

You can let me know if you’ll be able to attend (and which activities) so we can keep an eye out for you. OR just show up when/if your schedule allows. Hope to see some new faces!!

P.S. A few other things:

If you’re a fairly recent member of the Club and have not yet received a welcome packet, please be patient; you can expect to receive this in the next several days.

Look for the much-belated new edition of the newsletter to be delivered to your inbox soon…promise!

Tuesday night community runs leave from the Finish Line at 6PM, led by me. Distances vary but have been in the 4-6 mile range, with all paces accomodated. All runners welcome, not just Club members.

We will let those of you who purchased uniforms for 2010 know when the anticipated delivery date is as soon as we know.
