ENMU becomes an Official USAT Club
|
|
The Endurance Multisport Club has gained official club status by USA Triathlon (triathlon's governing body in the US), making us the newest recognized USAT Club in Pennsylvania! This makes all registered members eligible to compete in the USA Triathlon National Club Championships and as well as local Club series to possibly win awards and prizes. Click HERE for a list USAT's club benefits. In addition, a nice little perk is that for CGI Racing's events, members of official USAT clubs can upgrade to a FREE 2010 Commemorative Technical Shirt.

You must pre-reserve this shirt by emailing your race confirmation to mredrow@cgiracing.com by March 15th. |

Membership Growing
We're very happy to report that since its launch in early August 2009, ENMU has created a lot of local interest and back in the middle of December 2009 we already surpassed the 50 member mark!
We're confident that as word continues to spread that the Lehigh Valley has its own multisport club we will continue to see rapid growth in membership. Remember to let your friends and training partners know about us! In addition, if you're aware of any business that would be interested in becoming associated with the Club as a sponsor, please let us know about it, or have them contact us at club@endurancemultisport.com.

Newsletter Submissions
|
|
We want to hear from you! This is what we'd like to receive from everyone:
2010 race schedule – this doesn't need to be finalized, just what you expect to be doing this season. If anything changes along the way, just send us updates. We'll compile this info, distribute it so you know who will be at the same races, and use this to figure out which races will be the most well-attended so we can plan tailgating and other events.
Photos – individual or group; races, training events, or social get-togethers; with or without ENMU gear.
Race reviews – local or far-away destination events. Let others know why you liked it! If it's a local race, perhaps it can become a Club favorite.
What would YOU like to see in the newsletter? Got an idea for an interesting and/or entertaining feature? Would you like to be a contributor? Tell us your thoughts and although we can't guarantee everything will make it in, we'll do our best to incorporate your thoughts and suggestions.
REMEMBER: The more you contribute to the Club, the more you'll receive from your Club experience!

Partnerships with Local Race Organizers
|
|
Endurance Multisport has partnered with two of the most experienced race direction teams around:
First, we're thrilled to continue to sponsor the Steelman Triathlon and the Steelman Open Water Swim as the official coaching partner. The Steelman Open Water Swim will be held on July 11 at Nockamixon State Park in Quakertown, PA. The popular and very well-run Steelman Triathlon, to be contested this year on August 8, benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Keep watching the Steelman website for details about our involvement with these events!
We are also very proud to be the official coaching partner of Trimax Endurance Sports, which produces a full schedule of local-based road triathlon, off-road triathlon, and trail running events. Look for us at most of their events this season, and please check out their newly-posted 2010 race calendar HERE.

Tri Club Corner at CGI Racing's Black Bear Events
If you were at Black Bear last year (held at Beltzville State Park in Lehighton, PA), you may have noticed an area reserved for triathlon clubs to gather and hang out. This is called the Tri Club Corner, and ENMU will be there this year. Even if you don't plan on racing in either event (May 22-23), come on out to cheer on your fellow Club members! We'll be reminding everyone about this as the event draws near. Remember to send us your race schedules so we know if you'll be competing!

best, 2nd overall finish at Beware of Barracuda in '08. best finish yet. worst, age group Nat's '09. Got strep the day before, had one of my slowest swim splits ever, caught my shoe in the bike chain, and cramped on the run. 'Twas a fine day indeed.

Event Recaps
First Night 5K, Bethlehem, PA – 12/31/09 We sent out an email to everyone about this event being held on New Year's Eve afternoon. Despite the last minute notice and the snowy morning weather, several Club members showed up to log one final race for 2009. Afterward, the group reconvened at Bethlehem Brew Works for lunch and a beer or two. Thanks to Club member Wayne for taking the photo and giving support! Special congrats to Club members Jess (2nd female OA) and Andrew (for setting a PR...while wearing jeans!).
Shiver by the River 5K/10K – 1/10/10
Some Club members attended the January rendition of the Shiver by the River series held in Reading, PA. Kudos to Jess for taking 2nd female OA in the 10K!

Illuminating the
Dead of Winter
As the hours of daylight dwindle in autumn and the northern hemisphere cycles into its off-season, many athletes find their enthusiasm for adventure has abandoned them. Winter's freezing temps and frosty conditions can take their toll and leave even the most hardened of outdoor athletes bemoaning their state of fitness and lack of motivation. I've been there, too. However, with a different mindset and some tweaks to your schedule you can turn things around.
Some suggestions:

Train with others. The social pressure resulting from the simple act of committing to meet someone for a workout can help everyone in a group to stick to their plans. Plus, it's simply more fun than always going solo.
|

|
This is the ideal time to focus on short duration, high intensity repeats with adequate rest intervals. Anaerobic capacity, VO2max, and upper-level lactate threshold efforts will provide major fitness gains in a limited amount of time. For most workouts of this type, a total time of 40 minutes to 1 hour – including warm-up and cool-down – is sufficient. Time flies by during sessions like these, and it can be much more palatable than suiting up for a long, slow distance workout in adverse conditions.
|
| •
|
Incorporate strength training (especially core!) and plyometrics. Play around with stability balls, balance pillows, BOSU's, medicine balls, and wobble boards. These all can add some often much-needed variety into training routines.

If you want to stay indoors, make the best of it. Stationary cycling workouts and treadmill runs don't have to be mind-numbingly boring if structured properly, and they will provide you with excellent fitness for when you do return to the roads. Certain types of workouts are actually better when performed indoors. For instance, single-leg cycling drills on a trainer allow you to unclip one foot to work on efficient pedal stroke; interval sessions on a trainer or spin bike allow you to focus on the effort instead of the traffic and road signs; and hill repeats on the treadmill make you work the inclines without incurring eccentric muscle damage from downhill running. Also, you can easily use video and music to help motivate you.

Use the difficult circumstances to your advantage: you will gain mental toughness from tackling the elements on cold, windy, dark, and slushy days, and this will transfer into a performance edge over your competition on race day.

Make it FUN. Do something different. Try snowshoeing across open fields or XC-skiing. Trail run in a park you've never explored. Or go for a very late night run in the snow by the light of the moon...or a headlamp.

Thanks to Sponsors
|
|
For anyone who HASN'T been reading the Club Forum (shame on you!), you missed the unsolicited comment from one member who had this to say about ENMU's sponsors:
"....A huge thank you to all who created this club and recruited these great sponsors. I more than made up what I paid in club dues in a single afternoon just by the discounts on things that I needed anyways. Sorry, if this ended up being too long, but I felt the need to share my experiences with the other club members; these sponsors are top notch!"
And in response, Craig Sheckler of Endurance Multisport wrote:
"When Erica and I decided to establish the Club, we knew we wanted to provide people with value for their membership through support from local shops, and we wanted to assemble a who's-who in the fitness industry in the Lehigh Valley. So we turned for assistance to those places which we have personally used, trusted, and directed our coached clients to for years; these are in our opinion the best in their respective businesses. I do hope that all members take the time to discover and support our sponsors, and take advantage of services they provide and the savings they're offering. As you've found, it's well worth it!"
".... Our sponsors are just as excited to have a chance to reach out to triathletes and other endurance athletes throughout the area as we are thrilled to have them onboard...it's truly a win-win. Everyone, let's continue to show them we appreciate their involvement."

Exciting things
to come...
We can't go into any details, but trust us when we say that there are some revolutionary new ideas we're working on implementing and incorporating into our website that we don't believe you'll see ANYWHERE else in the multisport world at the moment. Stay tuned!
